when betting on horses
Horse racing takes place in Australia all year round, with betting meetings taking place every day except Christmas Day.
Most of the racing in Australia takes place on flat grass surfaces, although there are also a number of synthetic tracks in use. The season is shortened throughout the autumn. Tracks
across the country are divided into three categories – metropolitan, metropolitan and country.
In addition to the pure ability of the horse, individual factors such as track and weather conditions, weights, race distances, track and coaches can all play a role in trying to analyse its success potential.
Choose your bet
There are several different types of bets that a punter can choose from. These are:
Win - The horse must finish first for your bet to be successful.
Place - The horse must finish in the top three places for your bet to be successful (in races with seven or fewer starters this number is reduced to two).
Exotic - These include betting types such as quinella (where you have to pick the first two horses across the line in any order), exacta (where you have to pick the two crowns before they cross the line in the correct order), trifecta (where you have to pick the first three dragons across the line in the correct order) and First 4 (where you must pick the first four horses across the line in correct order). Another popular exotic option is quadrella, where you have to pick the winner of four races that have been won in a meeting (often the last four races on the programme).
When placing a Win or Place bet, punters have the option of choosing between fixed odds (the price you see is the price you get) or Tote odds (which are not set until the race has started).
Before placing a bet, it is useful to look for fluctuations (or 'flucs') near the current odds - these show the price movement for each runner and indicate how popular it is with punters.
